NEWPORT, R.I. - The Holy Cross women's tennis team tied for second place at the Salve Regina Doubles Invitational, held at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. Johnson & Wales claimed the team title with nine total points, while the Crusaders totaled eight points to tie with Bridgewater State for second.
Freshmen Addie Devine (Portland, Maine) and Abby Henry (Wellesley, Mass.) finished as the runners up in the B flight for Holy Cross. They defeated Brittney Hislop and Ashley Pereira of Bridgewater State 9-8 (7-0), then downed Lauren Chuha and Kimberly Love of Curry 8-2 in the semifinals. In the championship match, Devine and Henry were edged by Donna Gordon and Ashlyn Ramsay of Colby-Sawyer 9-8 (7-3).
Freshman Jackie Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y.) won the consolation bracket in the A flight. They were defeated by Lauren Hopp and Jenna Williamson of Bridgewater State 9-7 in the quarterfinals, before coming back with an 8-3 win over Elizabeth DiFilippo and Meg Olson of Salve Regina in their next match. In the consolation final, Carroll and Welch downed Liz Lincoln and Claire Toffey of Colby-Sawyer 8-5.
In the C flight, freshman Cassy Deng (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and senior Jessica DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) reached the semifinals. They won their first match 8-6 over Devin Curley and Elizabeth Zarkades of Curry, before falling to Rachel Eramo and Alison Vautrin of Bridgewater State 8-6 in the semifinals.
Holy Cross returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 23, when it takes part in the Bryant Invitational.
