WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior women's tennis player Emily Marr (Jefferson, Mass.) has been named the 2012 Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year as voted on by sports information directors from around the league. Marr's nod marks the first time in program history that a Crusader has won the conference's top academic honor. She was also named to the 2012 Academic All-Patriot League team along with junior Jessica DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.).
Marr finished the season with a 3.59 GPA and is a double-major in Sociology and Political Science. She was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team as a junior and to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll three times. She is a two-time team captain and tied the team-high with an 11-5 record in singles action this season, leading the Crusaders to their best finish since the 2008-2009 season. Marr also teamed up with fellow senior Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass.) this season to tie the team's highest number of wins in double action, finishing with a 14-9 record. She finishes her career with a 40-34 record in singles play.
DeSimone holds a team-leading 3.66 GPA and is majoring in Biology. This is her second time being named to the All-Academic team as she also earned the honor as a sophomore. She is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection and earned first honors this past semester. On the court, DeSimone finished in a tie for the best doubles record on the team this past season, boasting 14 wins and seven losses along with senior Emma Rudnik (Lake Bluff, Ill.).
The Academic All-Patriot League team has been added for all sports beginning in the 2010-2011 season to honor additional student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The women's tennis Academic All-Patriot League team has five student-athletes to equal the size of the sport's All-Patriot League first team.
