SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's tennis team broke into the wins column for the first time this season against Division III Springfield, topping the Pride 5-4 at the Appleton Tennis Courts. With the final tally, the Crusaders improve to a record of 1-11 on the season while the Pride registers a record of 5-9.
Holy Cross picked up the crucial doubles point as the tandem of junior captains Emily Marr (Jefferson, Mass.) and Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass.) won out, 8-4. Fellow junior captain Emma Rudnik (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and sophomore Jessica DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) also won 8-4 to clinch the team's first two points.
A strong showing from the team's single players sealed the win as Chandley, Marr and DeSimone won their respective singles matches. Chandley went three sets, but finished ahead in the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Marr and DeSimone cruised in their respective No. 3 and No. 6 matches, winning in straight sets to boost the team to victory.
The Crusaders travel to Endicott next on Wednesday, April 13. Matches are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the South Tennis Courts in Beverly, Mass.
