WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's tennis team participated at the Eastern Championship, hosted by Army for the first time in program history from Sept. 24 through Sept. 26 at the Malek Courts. The doubles team of Jessica DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) and junior Jen Daffron (Ramsey, N.J.) and singles player Emily Marr (Jefferson, Mass.) each advanced past the first round of their event to highlight the weekend.
Holy Cross had a total of two doubles teams compete. Junior Emma Rudnik (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and freshman Carrie Dajani (Lake Forest, Ill.) competed in the A doubles bracket while Daffron and DeSimone participated in the B doubles bracket. Both teams moved to the Courage bracket after losing their first competition. Daffron and DeSimone won in the second bracket, topping a Marist duo, 8-6, and then fell in the semifinal round.
In singles competition, freshman Molly Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill.) played in the A singles bracket and fellow freshman Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y.) played in the C bracket. Marr competed in the B bracket, winning her first match against Seton Hall's Karina Cordero-Martinez, 6-4, 6-1, before bowing out. Freshman Mary McAuliffe (Peru, N.Y.) participated in the D bracket, falling in the first round to complete Holy Cross' involvement in the tournament. A total of 10 singles brackets were held in the event.
Holy Cross will travel to Amherst, Mass., next to compete against Massachusetts on Thursday, Sept. 29. Matches are set to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Mullins Courts.
