PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Heavy rains cancelled the doubles portion of the Holy Cross women's tennis team's first dual match as Providence swept the singles segment to hand the Crusaders a 6-0 loss at the Providence Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon. With the result, the Crusaders collect a record of 0-1 while the Friars open up their dual match season with a record of 1-0.
Four Holy Cross players made their collegiate debuts in the singles lineup. Freshman Molly Montgomery (Winnetka, Ill.) made her first appearance at No. 1 singles, falling 6-1, 6-0 to Providence's Marisela Aviles-Duron. Fellow freshman Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y.) entered at the No. 3 singles spot, falling 6-0 and then 7-5 to Ayushi Sinha. Junior Emma Rudnik (Lake Bluff, Ill.), who saw only doubles action last season, debuted at No. 4 singles, falling 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Jessica DeSimone (Lincoln, R.I.) also made her first collegiate start at No. 6 singles, dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Alex Gerry.
Providence would also take the upper hand in the No. 2 and No. 5 singles competitions, topping junior Emily Marr (Jefferson, Mass.) at No. 2 and fellow junior Jen Daffron (Ramsey, N.J.) at No. 5. With the final results, the Friars topped Holy Cross 6-0.
The Crusaders are next in action on Saturday, Sept. 18, taking on Siena at home in Worcester, Mass. Matches are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts.
