Swimming and Diving Swept By Army

West Point, N.Y. - The Holy Cross men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both handed losses by Army, Wednesday evening in West Point, N.Y. The Crusader men fell to the Black Nights by a score of 164-105 while the women lost 161-108. The Crusaders tallied a number of event wins in a tough meet including the women's 100 yard breaststroke, the 50 yard butterfly, the 100 yard IM and the 200 yard freestyle relay. The men's team took the 500 yard freestyle, the 50 yard butterfly, 100 yard IM and the 200 yard freestyle relay. Freshman Maggie Gousman (Fanwood, N.J.) got the first Holy Cross win on the day in the 100 yard breaststroke. Covering the 100 yards, her first split time was slower than her competitor from Army. Gousman fought back, ultimately taking the event in 1:09.27. The men's first win came in the 500 yard freestyle. Junior Chris Smith (West Haven, Conn.) swam the 500 yards in 5:11.34, taking the nine points for Holy Cross.

Junior Andrea Doherty (Needham, Mass.) won a butterfly event for the fourth meet in row. Her time of 27:09 won the 50 yard butterfly and paced fellow Crusaders junior Rachel Quaden (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Cupelo (Manlius, N.Y.), who finished in second and third, respectively. Sophomore Maddie Alanis (La Jolla, Calif.) took the 100 yard IM for the Crusaders, finishing the event in first in 1:06.67. Quaden was less than a second behind her, taking the second spot in 1:07.62.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Doherty, senior Erica Archer (Schenectady, N.Y.), Gousman and freshman Alisha Carrazza (Boonton Township, N.J.) came together to give the Crusaders another victory for the day. The team took first place in 1:41.91, beating another Crusader entry in the event by nearly nine seconds. The second place team of sophomore Caitlin Duggan (Norwood, Mass.), freshman Lauren Tatro (Charlotte, N.C.), Cupelo and Alanis finished in 1:50.77.

Sophomore James McCullough (Orefield, Pa.) and senior Brian Jackson (Phoenixville, Pa.) tied for a win in the 50 yard butterfly. In a swimming rarity, both swimmers would touch the pad at the exact same time. Their finishes of 25.78 would earn each Crusader 6.5 points and a total of 13 for the men's team. Freshman Aaron Brosnan (Westford, Mass.) won the 100 yard IM in 58.26, beating out teammate McCullough by 1.05 seconds. Brosnan would be a part of another victory on the day, helping the Crusaders to a 200 yard freestyle relay victory. Brosnan, Smith, freshman Michael Dougher (Amherst, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Kitson (Chappaqua, N.Y.) would combine to win the event in 1:41.91. The team of sophomore Sean O'Reilly (Bronx, N.Y.), junior Shannon Sweeny (Philadelphia, Pa.), freshman Michael Ragone (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and sophomore Mike Marquet (Reston, Va.) took second in the event with a time of 1:42.76.

Freshman Rachael Martinez (Chelmsford, Mass.) took second in both diving events. Martinez finished with a total of 222.33 points on the 1M board and 236.93 points in the 3M board. Lindsey Adao took both events for Army. Freshman Joshua Rodrequez (Dudley, Mass.) was the highest placing Holy Cross entry in the 1M diving event taking 138.75 points and fifth place. On the 3M board, sophomore Conor O'Neil was the highest placing Crusader with 129.98 points and fifth place.

The Crusader men drop to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League, while Army moves to 3-0, 2-0 in the Patriot League. The women go to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League. The Army women improve to 1-2 and 1-1 in the League.

The Holy Cross men's and women's swimming and diving teams are back in the pool next Tuesday afternoon in Providence, R.I. The Crusaders are set to take on the Friars from Providence College at 4:30 p.m. in the Taylor Natatorium.
