Women's Swimming And Diving Defeats Providence, 145-97

Worcester, Mass. - Holy Cross men's and women's swimming and diving team hosted Providence in this afternoons last home meet of the season. The Crusaders men's and women's teams took a combined 15 events, women taking eight, men taking seven. Senior Chris Smith (West Haven, Conn.) had two individual wins as well as a relay win to lead the Crusaders men. For the women, senior Andrea Doherty (Needham, Mass.) had an individual win to go along with her relay win to lead the Crusaders.
The Holy Cross and Providence men's teams were neck and neck from event 12 on. In event 24, the 200-yard breaststroke sophomore Brian Livingston (Auburn, Wash.) took the win with a time of 2:21.48 giving the men a 116-106 lead over Providence. In the final event, the 400-yard free relay, the Crusaders took first with the time of 3:20.6 to win the meet. On the relay team was sophomore Joseph McShane (Chatham, N.J.), junior David Drummond (Swampscott, Mass.), junior Ian MacLaren (Cortez, Colo.) and Smith. Smith also took the 1000-yard free with a time of 10:28.27 as well as the 500-yard free at 5:05.36. MacLaren took firsts in the 50-yard free with a time of 23:17 and in the 100-yard free with a time of 50.33.
The women took the lead from event one and continued on thru the rest of the meet. Doherty took firsts in the 100-yard free with a time of 56:56. Sophomore Alisha Carrazza (Boonton Township, N.J.) took a first in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:59.78. Freshman Gael Carter (Tampa, Fla.) took first in the 50 free with a time of 26:15. Sophomore Maggie Gousman (Fanwood, N.J.) took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with at time of 2:37.34. Carrazza, Carter, Gousman, and Doherty were all apart of the 400-yard medley relay that took first with a time of 4:08.95.
In diving sophomore Rachel Martinez (Chemsford, Mass.) took first in the 1-meter (6 opts) diving with 228.67 points and teammate diver freshman Sarah Kearns (Marions, Mass.) took first in the 1-meter (5 vols) with 136.20 points.
Holy Cross men will compete again at Boston College Tuesday, February 5, at 10:00 a.m. Women compete again at the Patriot League Championships starting February 21, at 10:00 a.m.
