Women's Swimming & Diving Takes Second At Worcester City Championship

WORCESTER, Mass. – The women's swimming and diving team finished second at the Worcester City Championship on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute as freshman Marielle Pavek (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) was given the Cathy Desrosiers Award for Female Swimmer of the Meet after finishing first in the 50 and 100 freestyles, breaking Worcester City Championship meet records in the process. The Crusaders finished with 964 team points as Assumption came away with the championship with 1,143.5 points.

Pavek finished with times of 24.88 in the 50 and 53.88 in the 100. She also finished fourth in the 200 freestyle at 2:02.15. The rookie was also a member of the first place 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams. Freshman Colleen Harrison (Lake Forest, Ill.) added a first place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.01 and second place finish in the 500 freestyle at 5:20.95.

Other second place finishers for the Crusaders included freshman Kristin Lane (White Plains, N.Y.) in the 400 IM (4:55.92) and 1,650 freestyle (18:36.34), freshman Jessie Cashman (Haddonfield, N.J.) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.41) and freshman Alicia Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) in the 200 IM (2:14.96). Third place finishers for Holy Cross included junior Alicia LiCalzi (New Canaan, Conn.) in the one-meter dive (315.55), Perry in the 200 freestyle (2:02.09) and 100 butterfly (1:01.42), Cashman in the 200 backstroke (2:18.35), freshman Gina DeFloria (Greensburg, Pa.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.18) and junior Anna Villani (Hanover, Mass.) in the 200 butterfly (2:20.54).

The 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams were comprised of Harrison, Perry, junior Mary Kate Schulte (Des Moines, Iowa) and Pavek and finished with times of 1:41.58 (meet record) and 3:40.58 (pool record). The 800 freestyle relay team of Harrison, Lane, Perry and Pavek finished up at 8:00.63 (meet record).

The women's swimming and diving team will return to competition on Saturday, Jan. 25, against Providence at the Hart Center. Prior to the meet, head coach Barry Parenteau will make a brief presentation to honor the senior members of the team in their final home meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
