WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross softball program, under head coach Brian Claypool, has named senior Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) and juniors Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) and Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) as 2009 team captains.
Cruz returns as the lone four-year veteran, poised to provide the team with guidance and leadership throughout the season. "She brings a strong competitive spirit through her ability to perform wherever the team needs her," said Claypool. "She motivates her team through her actions and remains our most versatile player." In 2008 Cruz played 40 games and started in 35 of them. She ended the season with a .250 batting average and tallied 24 hits with four doubles, two triples and two home runs. Cruz also recorded a whopping 44 strikeouts from the pitcher's mound, which was the most of any pitcher on the team last season. On May 5, 2008 she was named Crusader of the Week after she helped the Crusaders split a four-game series at Colgate, hitting .333 with two home runs and posting a 2-1 record in the circle.
Audette also assumes a role of leadership this season, aiming to lead her teammates by her strong work ethic and positive example. "Dettey is a work horse, she trains hard and plays hard," explained Claypool. "Her mental approach and will to prepare is a great example to her team of the dedication it takes to play Division I softball." Last season Audette started in 31 of the 36 games she played in. She recorded a batting average of .207 with 17 hits and three doubles. She also tallied 19 strikeouts from the pitcher's mound.
Audette's classmate, Correale, will also be a captain for the Crusaders this season. The junior third baseman started in all 39 games she played in last year and boasts a .277 batting average with 33 hits and six doubles. On April 7, 2008 she was named Crusader of the Week after she recorded seven hits and four runs batted in while hitting .538 in a four-game series against Patriot League opponent Army. Claypool cites Correale's calm sense of confidence as one of her biggest attributes and is confident that it will help her lead the team this season. "Mandy's positive work ethic and calm demeanor allow her to work well with her teammates," he explained. "They respect her talent and commitment to the program and can learn a lot from her tenacious defense and confident approach at the plate."
The Crusaders are currently in the middle of their fall softball schedule and will be back in action when they compete in the Purple and White Inter-Squad Game on Saturday, September 20, at 12:00 p.m.
