Holy Cross Softball Splits Doubleheader With Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. The Holy Cross softball team split a doubleheader with Army this afternoon in Patriot League action at the Softball complex in West Point, N.Y., losing the first game by a score of 8-5 and taking the second by a score of 6-0. The Crusaders are now 4-13 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights are 9-20 and 3-1 in league play. Army won the weekend series, 3-1.
In the first game, after the Black Knights took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Crusaders scored three runs in the third for a 3-1 lead. Army regained the lead in the bottom of the inning by scoring seven runs. Holy Cross scored a run in both the sixth and seventh as the Black Knights earned the 8-5 win.
Veronica Barth received the win as she allowed one earned run in five innings, while freshman Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) took the loss with five earned runs in two innings. Sophomore Caitlin Deitz (Delmar, N.Y.) went two-for-two at the plate with an RBI, while sophomore Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) went two-for-three with an RBI and Cruz also drove in a run.
In the second game, junior Lindsey MacNeil (Plymouth, N.H.) was outstanding as she pitched a complete game shutout allowing six hits and striking out two batters to improve to 2-4 on the season. She allowed only three Army base runners into scoring position.
The Crusaders scored all the runs that they would need in the third inning, when senior Megan Lally (Lake Forest, Calif.) hit a three run homer for her second home run of the season and her school record 11th of her career. Lally drove in her fourth run of the game with an RBI double. Cruz went one-for-three at the plate with an RBI, as she hit her first collegiate home run, while freshman Brooke Perrone (Southington, Conn.) drove in the other Holy Cross run with a double. Army's Chris Stauffer took the loss as she allowed three runs on four hits in four innings.
The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 6, at 3:00 p.m.
