ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) and sophomore Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) had two hits each to lead the Holy Cross softball team to its first win of the season against Detroit, 3-2, Friday at the Rebel Spring Games.
The game was knotted at one at the bottom of the sixth when Cruz started the inning with a single. Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.) put down a sacrifice bunt and Cruz was able to advance to third. Freshman Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) then hit in Cruz to put the Crusaders up by one (2-1). Correale advanced to second on a wild pitch before Julie Girard (Montague, Mass.) hit Correale in on a double.
Detroit scored one more in the seventh but Holy Cross held on to win, 3-2.
Later in the afternoon Tennessee State topped Holy Cross 4-0 in the last game of the Rebel Games.
The Crusaders (1-10) will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to play a non-conference double-header vs. Harvard Saturday at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
