Hamilton, N.Y.- The Holy Cross softball team traveled to Hamilton, N.Y., to face-off in a conference doubleheader against Colgate. In game one, Colgate beat the Crusaders 3-2 in eight innings, then in game two the Crusaders lost 6-3. Holy Cross falls to 8-31 overall (3-15 Patriot League), while Colgate improves to 10-21 overall (7-11 Patriot League).
In game one, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when a single by Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) brought home Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.). The Crusaders increased their lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) reached on an error and Correale came home. Colgate came back to tie the game at 2-2, as Tiana Tyeskey hit solo home runs in both the third and seventh innings. The Raiders then won the game on an RBI single by Amanda Eccleston in the eighth inning.
Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) took the loss for the Crusaders, allowing two runs on five hits in 2-1/3 innings of relief.
In game two, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) hit a two-run homer to put the Crusaders up 2-0. But Colgate took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, and added three more in the sixth inning to go up 6-2. The Crusaders scored one more run in the seventh when Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) hit a single to right field, bringing Belanger home. But Holy Cross could not add any more runs, as the Raiders held on for the win.
Pitching game two for the Crusader was Cruz, who took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on three hits in five innings.
The Crusaders finish the season with a doubleheader at Colgate on Thursday, May 1. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
