WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Sam Lenhardt (Duxbury, Mass.) went five for seven with two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases as the Holy Cross softball team split with Central Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon at Freshman Field. Central Connecticut defeated Holy Cross 4-1 in the first game and then Holy Cross rebounded for the 10-2 win in game two. With the split, Holy Cross finishes the season with a 13-34 overall record, while Central Connecticut improves to 8-33.
The game was scoreless for the first four and a half innings, as junior Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) battled on the mound with Central Connecticut's Rachel Brenneman. The Crusaders scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lenhardt reached first and advanced to second on an error by Brenneman and then scored on a pitch hit double by junior Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.). Central Connecticut came out in the sixth inning ready to go and scored three runs on three hits to take a 3-1 lead. The Blue Devils scored again in the seventh to end the game 4-1.
Audette pitched seven complete innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Brenneman also went the distance, allowing no earned runs on six hits.
The Crusaders took control of game two, scoring three runs in the first inning. Lenhardt led off the inning with a single and then stole second and third. Junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) reached first on a walk and also stole second. Lenhardt was able to score on a fielder's choice by sophomore Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Correale scored when Seniuk attempted to steal second. Holy Cross scored its third run of the inning on back-to-back doubles by sophomore Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) and freshman Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.).
The Crusaders took a 5-0 lead in the third inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Sophomore Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ground ball by Seniuk. Fleming drove in Medwid from second base on a double to left field and then scored on a single up the middle by Ortiz.
Central Connecticut scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Holy Cross answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 6-1. The Blue Devils scored again in the top of the fifth and Holy Cross responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning and added a run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game, 10-2.
Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) pitched four complete innings for the Crusaders and picked up her second win of the season, while freshman Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) entered the game in relief, pitching two innings. Abby Harp pitched five and one third innings for the Blue Devils, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits.
Holy Cross has concluded the 2009 season.
