WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -The Holy Cross softball team traveled to West Hartford, Conn., on Wednesday afternoon to take on Central Connecticut in a non-conference doubleheader. The Crusaders split the day with Central Connecticut, dropping the first game 4-2 and winning the second 6-2. Holy Cross now stands 8-25 overall, while Central Connecticut is 12-21 on the season.
In game one, Central Connecticut jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, before the Crusaders came back with two runs in the top of the fourth. Jayme Elliott (Gardenia, Calif.) scored the first run on an RBI double by Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.), then Seniuk would later cross the plate on an error. However, it would not be enough as the Blue Devils held on to win 4-2.
On the mound in game one was Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.), who allowed two earned runs on five hits in four innings of work. Closing the game was Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) with two scoreless innings.
In game two, the first three innings went scoreless before the Crusaders put six runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Elliott drove in the first run when she singled up the middle with the bases loaded. Seniuk followed with a grand slam home run to put Holy Cross up 5-0. Fleming was up next for the Crusaders, and hit a solo homer to make the score 6-0. Central Connecticut was able to score single runs in the both the fourth and fifth innings, as Holy Cross held on to win 6-2.
Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the victory for the Crusaders, allowing four hits and no earned runs in four innings. Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) gave up just one run in 2-2/3 innings of relief, before Fleming came in to record the final out.
The Crusaders return to action on April 26 with a doubleheader at Bucknell. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
