LEWISBURG, Pa.- The Holy Cross softball team dropped a doubleheader to Bucknell in Patriot League action, losing by scores of 8-0 and 7-5. The Crusaders are now 7-28 overall and 3-11 in the Patriot League, while the Bison are 13-31 and 6-8 in league games. These two teams will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
In the first game, Bucknell scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead when Lauren Wible hit a two-run homer to right field. The Bison scored two more runs in the third with an RBI single from Lauren Litts and a RBI double by Kris Devore. In the fifth inning, Bucknell increased its lead to 7-0 when Wible hit a RBI single and Devore drove in two runs with a double. Michelle Danish ended the game when she homered to center field in the sixth inning giving Bucknell the 8-0 win in six. Christie Wiest earned the victory as she pitched six scoreless innings on four hits, while senior Marsha Babcock (Ridgefield, Conn.) took the loss.
Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the top of third inning in the second game of the doubleheader when junior Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.) singled to center field driving in senior Megan Lally (Lake Forest, Calif.). Bucknell responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs to take a 3-1 lead when Litts hit a three-run homer to left field. The Bison increased their lead to 5-1 in the fourth with a RBI double by Damara Farkas and a RBI single by Wible.
In the top of the fifth, The Crusaders cut the Bucknell lead to 5-4 when sophomore Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) hit a three-run home run to left center field for her third homer of the season. Stangler and freshman Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) scored on the play as they each hit a single to reach base. After Bucknell scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single by Farkas, Holy Cross cut the deficit back to one run in the top of the sixth when sophomore Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) drove in freshman Brooke Perrone (Southington, Conn.) with a single. Kristin Frick had a RBI in the bottom of the sixth to give Bucknell a 7-5 lead which it held onto as the Crusaders went down in order in the top of the seventh.
Meaghan Haley earned the win as she allowed four runs in five innings on nine hits, while Tanya Roth received the save in two innings with one run allowed on two hits. Senior Lindsey MacNeil (Plymouth, N.H.) took the loss as she pitched the first three innings allowing five runs on five hits and Stangler pitched the last three innings allowing two runs on three hits.
