Worcester, Mass. - Holy Cross was swept twice, 4-1 and 6-5, by Harvard in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Soldiers Field.
In the first game, Harvard jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lauren Stefanchik opened the game with a bunt single and scored on Beth Sabin's two-run shot to center field. Cecily Gordon hit doubled to bring in Susie Winkeller, who reached on an infield single.
The Crimson added another run in the bottom of the third when Winkeller singled home Lauren Bettinelli for a 4-0 lead. With two outs senior Alycia FitzPatrick (Lake Forest, Calif.) spoiled a no-hitter for Harvard when she hit a single to left field in the top of the fourth.
Holy Cross took advantage of two Crimson errors in the top of the sixth when senior Mary Beth Ryan (Holden, Mass.) first reached on an error by the pitcher. After moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.), Ryan advanced home on an error by the right fielder to put the score at 4-1.
Sophomore Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Calif.) took the loss for the Crusaders. She scattered 10 hits, four earned runs and four strike outs over six innings. Shelly Madick struck out three in the first four innings and improves to 8-3. Michele McAteer threw the final three innings for Harvard to pick up the save giving up one run and struck out one.
The Crusaders leaped out to a one-run lead in the first inning. Ryan hit a leadoff double to left and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. She came across and scored on a passed ball for the early lead. Harvard tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Lauren Bettinelli laced an RBI single up the middle to plate Pilar Adams.
Junior Megan Lally (Lake Forest, Calif.) opened the top of the fourth with a single to left field. Junior Nicole Dessingue (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) slugged a two-run homer to left center to put Holy Cross up 3-1. The Crimson closed the gap to 3-2 when it scored on a double steal with Winkeller crossing the plate to cut the lead to one. FitzPatrick gave the Crusaders a two-run cushion with an RBI single in the fifth that scored freshman Rory Ogden (Latham, N.Y.).
Harvard cut the lead down to one with a run in the sixth when Stefanchik hit an RBI single through the left side, scoring Dell'Aria. The Crusaders matched the Crimson's run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. With the first two batters fanned, Ryan used an error by the short stop to reach base then moved into scoring position by stealing second. On two passed balled, Ryan advanced to third then home to put the Crusaders up by two runs. The Crimson used the bottom of the seventh to take control of the game, scoring three runs for a final score of 6-5. With two runners on, Winkeller hit a three-run homer to left field.
Becky Voaklander got the win for Harvard, scattering one hit and two unearned runs over the final three innings. She added four strikeouts to improve to 3-4. Sophomore Lindsey MacNeil (Plymouth, N.H.) gave up four hits and one run in the first three innings for Holy Cross, as senior Michelle Greene (Woburn, Mass.) threw the next three innings, giving up four hits and striking out four. Freshman Erica McKeever (Brookfield, Conn.) was in the circle for the final inning, giving up three hits, including the game-winner to record the loss.
Holy Cross takes on Colgate, Friday-Saturday, April 22-23 at Freshman Field in their last conference action of the regular-season. The first pitch will be thrown at 3 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
