Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross softball team concluded their series against Lehigh on Sunday afternoon, with a split of a doubleheader at Freshman Field. In game one Lehigh controlled the game to win 12-0, but the Crusaders fought back in game two to win 3-2, moving to 7-24 overall (3-9 Patriot League) while Lehigh now stands 31-13-1 overall (11-5 Patriot League).
In game one, Lehigh scored one run in the second inning to take the lead. In the third inning, the Mountain Hawks scored four more times to increase their lead to 5-0. Lehigh then added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, and closed out the game with another five runs in the seventh inning to earn the win. Lehigh had 14 hits while Holy Cross had four.
In the first inning of the second game, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead when senior Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) hit a single driving in freshman Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.). Inning two was scoreless for both teams, while Lehigh and Holy Cross both scored two runs in the third inning. The Crusaders scored on a two-run homer by freshman Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) brining home senior Jayme Elliot (Gardena, Calif.) for the 3-2 lead and victory over Lehigh as no more runs were scored in the game.
Sophomore Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the victory for the Crusaders, giving up just one earned run on four hits in four innings. Closing the game was freshman Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.), who gave up just one hit in three scoreless innings to earn the save.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, April 23, when they travel to West Hartford, Conn., to meet Central Connecticut in a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
