Holy Cross Softball Splits with Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Holy Cross softball team split with Hartford winning the first game 4-1 on seven hits and dropping the second game 10-2 in five innings Wednesday at the University of Hartford Softball Field. The Crusaders are now 4-31 overall while Hartford is 16-17 on the season.

Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) went 3-for-6 on the day while Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.) had two hits and Amanda Webster (Kenmore, N.Y.), Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.), Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) and Beth Richard (Fitchburg, Mass.) each had a hit.

Senior Lindsey MacNeil (Plymouth, N.H.) had eight strikeouts as she recorded the 4-1 win from the mound in the first game of the doubleheader for the Crusaders.


In game one, Holy Cross scored two runs on four hits in the third inning and two more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. In the third inning Richard started with a single to right field. Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) put down a sacrifice bunt before Stangler hit in Richard on a single up the middle. Cruz came up and hit a double to right field driving in Stangler, 2-0.

In the fifth inning Elliott bunted for a base hit followed by a single to left centerfield by Stangler. O'Neil got on base on a fielding error by the left fielder. Elliott and Stangler both reached home on the error to make it 4-0.

Hartford did not score until the bottom of the sixth inning on three hits and no errors, but could not get any closer as Holy Cross took the first game, 4-1.

In the second game, Hartford scored 10 runs on 13 hits and held Holy Cross to just three hits to win the game in five innings, 10-2.

The Crusaders are back in action Thursday when they travel to play a non-conference game against Providence at 4:00 p.m.
