Worcester, Mass. - In the second game of a doubleheader at Freshman Field, the Holy Cross softball team used another come from behind effort in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Hartford 8-7. The Crusaders improve to 5-22 on the season, while Hartford dropps to 15-13. Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit two home runs in the game, including one in the seventh to give Holy Cross the victory.
The Crusaders opend the game by jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) scored on of an RBI by Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.), then Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) added an RBI single to drive in O'Neil.
Hartford came back with three runs in the second inning, but the Crusaders responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to regain a 4-3 lead. Scoring were Seniuk and Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) off a two-run double by Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.).
Holy Cross increased its lead to 5-3 in the third inning on a solo home run by Seniuk. But Hartford fought back in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to go back in front 6-5.
Hartford would then scored once in the top of the seventh, sending Holy Cross to its last at-bat trailing 7-6. But the Crusaders tied it up when Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.) drove home Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) with an RBI groundout. With the score then tied at 7-7 with two outs and no runners on base, Seniuk gave Holy Cross the victory with another solo home run to end the game.
Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) earned the victory for Holy Cross, allowing just one earned run on five hits in 3-2/3 innings of relief.
The Crusaders play again April 19 in a conference doubleheader against Lehigh. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
