Worcester, Mass.- The Holy Cross softball team played at home for the third day in a row, hosting Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader at Freshman Field. In game one, the Crusaders, trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, before coming back with four runs to claim a 7-6 victory. The Crusaders improved to 4-22 overall with the win while Hartford dropped to 15-12.
Hartford jumped out to an early lead in the game, with one run in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning and two more in the fifth. Trailing 6-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth, the Crusaders scored three times to claw their way back into the game. Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) hit a single to drive in two runs, as Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) scored. Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) then added an RBI single to drive in Elliott.
In the seventh inning, Fleming drove in the first run when her RBI triple brought Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) across the plate. Next, Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) hit an RBI double to drive in Fleming. Holy Cross still trailed by one run, before Nealon hit a single that brought home Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) to tie the game and Deitz for the win.
Pitching for the Crusaders was Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.), who tossed a complete game and struck out nine to earn her first victory of the season.
