Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross softball team finished off their four-game series with Lafayette at Freshman Field on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders fell to the Leopards 4-3 in game one and 7-3 in game two, dropping to 3-22 (1-7 Patriot League), while Lafayette improves to 17-15 (8-4 Patriot League).
In game one, the Crusaders scored their first run in the second inning when Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) scored off of an RBI by Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.). The Crusaders increased their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning as Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) scored off of an RBI by Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.). During the sixth inning the Leopards fought back to score three runs, but the Crusaders tied the game up when Jayme Elliot (Gardena, Calif.) had an RBI single to drive Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.) home. But Lafayette came back to score one more run in the seventh inning to win the game.
Pitching game one was Belanger, who allowed three runs on five hits in 5-1/3 innings. Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) closed out the game, allowing a run on two hits in 1-2/3 innings.
In game two, Lafayette took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a home run by Christina Giambrone. The Leopards then increased their lead to 6-0 with five more runs in the top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Holy Cross put its first run on the board when Belanger scored off of an RBI by Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.). Both teams then added one run in the seventh to conclude the scoring. Scoring for the Crusaders was Nealon off of an RBI from Seniuk.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, April 15, with a doubleheader against Hartford at Freshman Field. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
