April 13, 2009
WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.) pitched four innings of shutout ball to pick up her first Patriot League win of the season as the Holy Cross softball team split with Army on Monday afternoon at Freshman Field. Army defeated Holy Cross 5-4 in game one and then Holy Cross rallied to win game two, 4-3. With the split, Holy Cross improves to 9-25 (3-9 Patriot League) while Army improves to 16-26 (5-7 Patriot League).
Army took a three run lead, scoring one run in each of the first three innings, before Holy Cross was able to get on the score board. The Crusaders scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game 3-3. Freshman Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) led the charge when she reached first and advanced to second on an error by the Army third baseman. Trainor then stole third and scored on a throwing error by Army's catcher. Holy Cross scored two more runs when junior Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) ripped a triple to right field and sophomore Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) drew a walk to get on base. Both runners scored on an error by the third baseman to tie the game 3-3.
In the top of the fourth inning, Army took advantage of two Holy Cross errors, scoring three runs on two hits, to take a 6-3 lead. The Black Knights scored again in the top of the sixth inning and Holy Cross put up a run in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't score again, falling to Army 7-4.
Audette started in the circle for the Crusaders, pitching a complete game and giving up three earned runs on seven hits. Shawna Bleyl earned the win for the Black Knights, pitching seven complete innings and giving up one earned run on five hits.
After two and a half scoreless innings, Holy Cross jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Elizabeth Foley (Charlton, Mass.) got the Crusaders started when she reached first on an error by Army's pitcher. Freshman Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) hit a double to left field to advance Foley to third base and Audette picked up a RBI when she scored Foley on a suicide bunt. Medwid grounded out to the shortstop to score Reimer and sophomore Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) singled to center field to score Audette. Junior Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.) singled to right field to score Seniuk for the fourth Crusader run of the inning.
Army threatened to make a comeback, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh, but Holy Cross' defense held off the Army offense, ending the game in favor of the Crusaders 4-3.
Pivonka picked up her first win of the season, pitching four complete innings and allowing no runs on two hits. Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) entered the game in relief, pitching two and a third innings and giving up one earned run on two hits. Audette closed out the game, pitching in the last two outs of the game and picking up her first save of the year. Jessi Muckelroy suffered the loss for the Black Knights, pitching two and two thirds innings and giving up one earned run on five hits.
