WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross had ten hits to top Lafayette 6-4 in game one of the doubleheader and then fell 10-2 in game two Friday at Metzgar Field. The Crusaders are now 3-28 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
In game one, the Crusaders scored two in the first inning as Correale singled to right field followed by a single from Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.). Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) singled to right field hitting in Correale and Stangler scored the second run of the inning when she stole home. Lafayette scored a run in the first and second innings to tie the game at two, but Holy Cross came back with two more runs in the third inning when Correale doubled to center field and Stangler hit her first homerun of the season.
The Leopards tied the game again in the fourth inning but the Crusaders came back with two more runs in the seventh when Mallory Centonze (Victor, N.Y.), Caitlin Deitz (Delmar, N.Y.), Elliott, and Stangler each had hits to win the game 6-4.
Stangler recorded the win on the mound for the Crusaders striking out three and allowing just four runs on eight hits.
In the second game, Lafayette scored three runs in the first two innings to get the early lead. It wasn't until the fifth inning that Holy Cross scored two runs on two hits and two errors to make it 3-2. In the inning Cruz singled and Correale hit a triple. The Leopards put the game away scoring seven runs at the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead 10-2 and end the game early due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The Crusaders will face Lafayette in the second doubleheader of the series Saturday at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
