LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Holy Cross softball team split a doubleheader with Siena this afternoon in non-conference action at Siena Field, losing the first game by score of 9-3 and winning the second game, 5-1. The Crusaders are now 6-19 overall, while the Saints are 10-23. Sophomore Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) went four-for-seven at the plate in the two games with three RBIs and she hit her second home run of the season, while sophomore Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) also went four-for-seven as she scored two runs.

In the Holy Cross win, senior pitcher Marsha Babcock (Ridgefield, Conn.) was outstanding on the mound as she allowed only one run on four hits, while striking out four, to earn the complete game win and to improve to 4-5 on the season.

After three scoreless innings, the Crusaders exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth. The scoring began as O'Neil hit a two-run single driving in freshman Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J) and Elliott. Sophomore Erica McKeever (Brookfield, Conn.) and junior Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.) scored when sophomore Amanda Webster (Kenmore, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error by the Siena shortstop with the bases loaded and advanced to second base, while senior Nicole Dessingue (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) moved to third. Senior Heather Johnson (Wrentham, Mass.) then had an RBI driving in Dessingue. Siena scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the inning with a home run by Jennifer Granato.

In the first game, after trailing 1-0 the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning as Cruz doubled and advanced to third on a single by Elliott who then stole second base. Cruz then scored on a pass ball with Elliott advancing to third and eventually scoring on a throwing error on a bunt by junior Beth Richard (Fitchburg, Mass.).

The Saints regained the lead at 3-2 in the fourth, but the Crusaders answered back in the top of the fifth to tie the game when O'Neil hit a solo homer. Siena took control of the game in the bottom of the sixth when they scored six runs, including a grand slam by pitcher Tara Campbell. Campbell earned the win as she allowed no earned runs in six innings, while junior Lindsey MacNeil (Plymouth, N.H.) took the loss.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16, when they host Patriot League opponent Lehigh in a four-game series at Freshman Field. Both doubleheaders are set to start at noon.
