Holy Cross Softball Drops Two To Army

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) went three for six at the plate with a triple and a double as the Holy Cross softball team was swept by Army on Sunday afternoon at Freshman Field. Army defeated Holy Cross 5-3 in game one and 4-3 in game two. With the two losses, Holy Cross falls to 8-24 (2-8 Patriot League) while Army improves to 15-26 (4-6 Patriot League).
The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a two run lead. With two outs, freshman Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) started a Holy Cross rally with a double through the left side of the infield. Junior Elizabeth Foley (Charlton, Mass.) advanced Trainor with a single to third base and then both runners scored on a base hit up the middle by freshman Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.).
The Black Knights scored one run in the top of the third inning and one in the top of the fourth to tie the game, 2-2, and then took the lead with a run in the top of the fifth. Holy Cross tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring on a RBI triple by Medwid. Army scored in the top of the sixth inning to regain the lead and then put up one run in the top of the seventh for insurance.
Junior Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) started on the mound for the Crusaders, pitching seven complete innings and giving up five runs on seven Army hits. Shawna Bleyl earned the win for the Black Knights, pitching seven complete innings and giving up three runs on six hits.
Army took a quick 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and then one in the top of the third. Holy Cross put a run across home plate in the bottom of the third inning when Audette scored on a RBI double by Medwid. Army scored in the top of the fourth inning to take the 4-1 lead. Holy Cross scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.) doubled to center field and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Audette. The Crusaders put up one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't come any closer, falling 4-3.
Junior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.) made the start for the Crusaders, pitching three innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) entered the game in relief, pitching four innings and giving up one run on two hits. Jessi Muckelroy picked up the win for the Black Knights, pitching seven innings and giving up three runs on eight hits.
The Crusaders continue Patriot League action against Army at Freshman Field on Monday, April 13 starting at 11:00 a.m.
