WORCESTER, Mass. - Army downs Holy Cross softball, 1-0 and 12-0 in conference play Saturday at Freshman Field. The Crusaders fall to 2-23 overall and 0-6 in the league while the Black Knights improve to 9-24 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
In the first game, Army scored the lone run of the game in the third inning when Yates hit a single to left field with one out. She stole second and advanced to third on the throw before Chris Stauffer hit her in on a sacrifice fly to left field. Holy Cross was unable to score leaving nine runners on base on four hits from Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.), Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.), Rory Ogden (Latham, N.Y.) and Caitlin Deitz (Delmar, N.Y.).
In game two, the Black Knights scored one in the first to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Army loaded the bases in the second inning on two hits and one walk. Senior shortstop Lindsay Gerheim cleared the bases when she hit a grand slam with two outs to make it a 5-0 game. The Black Knights loaded the bases again in the third inning and scored two more before freshman Erin McClain hit the second grand slam of the game for Army to take an 11-0 lead. Sophomore Cruz hit a double for Holy Cross while Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.), Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) and Ogden each added a hit, but the Crusaders could not retaliate, losing the game 12-0 in five innings.
The Crusaders host Army again in a doubleheader Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m. at Freshman Field.
