West Point, N.Y. - The Holy Cross women's softball team continued their series at Army on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader with the Black Knights. Army defeated the Crusaders 4-2 in game one, but Holy Cross battled back to win the second game 11-4. Holy Cross moves to 3-16 (1-3 Patriot League) while Army now stands 7-27 (3-5 Patriot League).
In game one the Crusaders scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning when Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) and Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass. ) crossed home plate off of RBI's from Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) and Keeley Seniuk (Phoeniz, Ariz.). Army came back to total four runs in the fourth and fifth innings, to earn the win.
Pitching for the Crusaders was Cruz, allowing five hits and four runs while recording three strikeouts. Closing the game was Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.), tossing 1-1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
In game two the Crusaders gave up four runs in the first inning, but battled back in the second with six runs and added four more runs in the third inning and one in the seventh.
Correale led Holy Cross in game two, going 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) and Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) also had big games, both totaling three hits, two RBI and a home run. In addition, Seniuk and Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) both added three hits for the Crusaders.
Belanger earned the victory in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with one strikeout. Julie Girard (Montague, Mass.) and Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) also pitched one scoreless inning each out of the bullpen.
The Crusaders will return to action on April 12 at Freshman Field with a doubleheader against Lafayette. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
