WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) went three for six at the plate with a triple and two runs scored as the Holy Cross softball team was defeated by Colgate twice on Sunday afternoon at Freshman Field. Colgate defeated Holy Cross 4-1 in the first game and 11-3 in game two. With the two losses, Holy Cross falls to 8-22 (2-6 Patriot League) while Colgate improves to 15-10 (5-3 Patriot League).
Game one was tied, 1-1, until Colgate scored in the top of the 10th inning to take the lead and pick up the win. The Raiders scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Tiana Tyeskey crossed home plate. Tyeskey drew a walk and advanced to second on a stolen base. Calla Yee put down a sacrifice bunt to move Tyeskey to third and a single to center field by Amanda Eccleston scored the first run of the game.
Holy Cross responded, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Medwid drove a triple to center field for the first Crusader hit of the afternoon. Junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) scored Medwid in with a single to center field.
Tight defense and tough pitching kept the game tied until the 10th inning when Colgate scored three runs on four hits. Holy Cross was unable to mount a rally in the bottom of the inning, falling 4-1 in 10 innings.
Junior Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) started in the circle for Holy Cross, pitching 9.2 innings and giving up four runs on 12 hits. Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) entered the game in relief, pitching the last out of the game. Lacy Ver Steeg pitched a complete game for the Raiders, allowing just one run on four hits.
Colgate took a five run lead in the top of the second inning, but Holy Cross cut the Raider lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) started the inning with a single through the left side of the Colgate defense. Seniuk stole second base and scored on a RBI single by junior Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.). Nealon scored Holy Cross' second run on a RBI double to center field by freshman Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.).
Colgate put two runs on the board in the third inning and added four in the sixth inning to take an 11-2 lead. Holy Cross was able to score one more run in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 11-3 in favor of the Raiders.
Alexander started on the mound for the Crusaders, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits. Junior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.) entered the game in relief, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on two hits. Jesse McCarrick pitched a complete game for Colgate, allowing two earned runs on seven Holy Cross hits.
The Crusaders travel to Siena on Tuesday, April 7 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
