Holy Cross Softball Drops Two To Colgate

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) and junior Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) each tripled to right field as the Holy Cross softball team was swept by Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Freshman Field. Colgate defeated Holy Cross 8-1 in the first game and then came from behind to defeat the Crusaders 4-3 in game two. With the two losses, Holy Cross falls to 8-20 (2-4 Patriot League) while Colgate improves to 13-10 (3-3 Patriot League).

Game 1

Holy Cross jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) scored for the Crusaders. Reimer reached first on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.). Reimer stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Colgate catcher to give Holy Cross the early lead.

Colgate scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take the 4-1 lead and then put up three runs in the fifth for the 7-1 lead. Holy Cross was unable to get past Colgate pitcher Jesse McCarrick, as McCarrick did not give up a hit until Correale singled to left field in the sixth inning. The Raiders put another run on the board in the seventh inning, ending the game with the 8-1 win.

Senior Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) started on the mound for the Crusaders, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits. Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) entered the game in relief, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up four runs on three hits. McCarrick pitched the complete game for the Raiders, giving up one run on two Holy Cross hits.

Game 2

The Crusaders took control of game two, scoring the first three runs of the game, but were unable to hold off a surging Colgate offense. Holy Cross put its first run on the board in the second inning when Audette reached first on a bunt for a base hit. Audette then stole second and Cruz took first on a walk. Junior Elizabeth Foley (Charlton, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to score Audette from second base and give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when junior Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) scored. Medwid reached first on a base hit to left field and then moved up a bag on a sacrifice bunt by Correale. Medwid advanced to third base on a single by Seniuk and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.). The Crusaders took a three run lead in the fourth inning when Audette led off the inning with a triple to right field and scored on a RBI single to center field by Cruz.

Colgate's offense got to work, chipping away at the Holy Cross lead in the top of the fifth inning when Erin Gomez singled down the left field line to score Nicole Siedhof. The Raiders scored again in the sixth inning when Jennifer Ortega hit a homerun over the left field fence. Colgate tied the game and took the lead in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on two hits and one Holy Cross error. The Crusaders were unable to rally in the bottom of the inning, ending the game in favor of the Raiders, 4-3.

Audette made the start in the circle for the Crusaders, pitching six complete innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits. Junior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.) entered the game in relief, pitching one complete inning and giving up one run on two hits. McCarrick teamed up with Michelle Hollebeke to defeat the Crusaders, allowing just three runs on 10 Holy Cross hits.

The Crusaders continue Patriot League action against Colgate at Freshman Field on Sunday, April 5 at 12:00 p.m.
