Softball Drops Doubleheader To Army

WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Holy Cross softball team dropped two games to Army this afternoon in Patriot League action at the Softball complex in West Point, N.Y., losing by scores of 6-1 and 11-8. The Crusaders fall to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights improve to 8-19 and 2-0 in league play. These two teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.

In the first game, Army scored two runs in the second and one in the third for a 3-0 lead, before the Crusaders cut the deficit to 3-1 when senior catcher Heather Johnson (Wrentham, Mass.) scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Army answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning and held the Crusaders scoreless the rest of the way for the 6-1 win. Veronica Barth pitched a complete game allowing no earned runs on three hits to earn the victory, while senior Marsha Babcock (Ridgefield, Conn.) took the loss as she allowed four earned runs in five innings.

Army scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including a game-winning grand slam by Veronica Lauzon, to earn the 11-8 win in the second game. The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the third, before the Black Knights cut it to 5-4 after four innings. Holy Cross scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead, including a two-run homer by senior Nicole Dessingue (Schaghticoke, N.Y.). The Black Knights entered the bottom of the seventh down 8-5 and cut it to 8-7 after Jamie Gjurgevich hit a two-run double with the bases loaded. After an intentional walk, Lauzon hit the grand slam to win the game.

Barth earned her second win of the day as she pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while freshman Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) received the loss. Dessingue and Cruz each had two RBIs, while senior Megan Lally (Lake Forest, Calif.) and freshman Brooke Perrone (Southington, Conn.) each chipped in with one RBI.
