Crusaders Split With Black Knights

Worcester, Mass. - After falling to Army, 4-0 in the first game, freshman Jayme Elliot (Gardena, Calif.) hit a two-run single to right center to bring in the game-tying and -winning runs to end the game 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh Friday night at Freshman Field.

In the second game the Crusaders jumped off to 1-0 lead as senior Alycia FitzPatrick (Lake Forest, Calif.) grounded out to second base, but brought in senior Mary Beth Ryan (Holden, Mass.), who doubled to reach base and advanced to third on a single bunt by Elliott.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Black Knights leaped to a 5-1 lead in the top of the third, with runs by Lindsey Romack, Lisa Huntington, Veronica Lauzon, Lauren Gobar and Lindsey Gerheim.

The Crusaders cut in on Army's lead in the bottom of the third, giving the Black Knight's only a one-run lead. Leading off was FitzPatrick, who reach on a single to center field and advance to second after junior Nicole Dessingue (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) reached base on balls. With two runners on base, freshman Kelly O'Neil slugged in a three-run homer over the right center fence, putting the score at 5-4, Army.

The Black Knights answered with two runs in the top of the fourth when Lauzon hit an RBI double to left field, bringing in Lindsay March, who walked to reach base. Lauzon went on steal home for the second run of the inning, after moving to third on a single by Darcy Wilson. Holy Cross matched Army's two runs in the bottom of the fourth when FitzPatrick slugged a two-run homer to left field, bringing in Elliot, who singled to reach base.

In the top of the fifth the Black Knight's put three up and three down as relief pitcher Erica McKeever (Brookfield, Conn.) struck out one. In the bottom of the inning, lead off hitter O'Neil blasted solo home-run to tie game, 7-7.

Army took a one-run lead in the top of the seventh when starting pitcher MacNeil resumed her duties in the circle, walking in Jamie Gjurgevich, who doubled to right center and advanced to third on a single by Chris Stauffer.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, junior Heather Johnson (Wrentham, Mass.) singled to left center and advanced to second when pinch hitter Amanda Webster (Kenmore, N.Y.) was hit by relief pitcher Kelly Trout. With runners on second and third, Ryan reached first on balls to load the bases, setting up Elliott for a two-run single to right center, bringing in Johnson and Webster for a final score of 9-8, Crusaders.

MacNeil struck out two and walked five over three broken innings of action for the win, as Trout allowed two earned runs on three hits over 2.1 innings.

In the first game, Holy Cross was held scoreless by Army, 4-0, as senior Michelle Greene (Woburn, Mass.) struck out four and walked three over 6.1 innings of work. The Crusaders were only able to muster one hit as Army tallied eight hits and four runs for the win. Taking the win for the Black Knights was relief pitcher Trout, who struck out three Crusaders and allowed their only hit of the game, by Dessingue in the in the fourth.

The Crusaders return to Freshman Field on Saturday, April 2 to face Army in a doubleheader commencing at 9 a.m. pending the weather outcome.
