WORCESTER, Mass. - Colgate softball swept Holy Cross, 3-0 and 7-3, in the Crusaders' Patriot League opener Saturday at Freshman Field. The Raiders start off 2-0 in the league while the Crusaders go 0-2.
In game one, Colgate's Vicky Ortengren hit a solo home run to start off the third inning. Tiana Tyeskey then reached base on a fielding error and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meg Mylan. LaPorscha Albert also got on after another Crusader fielding error to move Tyeskey over to third. Calla Yee singled in Tyeskey to take a 2-0 lead. The Raiders scored again in the fifth inning and held Holy Cross to just two hits from junior Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) and freshman Julie Girard (Montague, Mass.) to win the game, 3-0.
In the second game, Colgate again started off with a home run from Kimberley Spinks in the second inning. Holy Cross answered with a home run from Kelly O'Neil (White Plains, N.Y.) in her next at bat to tie the game at one.
Calla Yee hit a double at the top of the third with one out for the Raiders. She was moved to third on a ground out to third and was knocked in when Jessica Sabo singled up the middle to make the score 2-1 in the top of the third inning. Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) came back with a two-run home run to give the Crusaders a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
In the fifth inning Ortengren hit a single for the Raiders and was bunted over to second before Sabo drove her in to tie the game at three. Colgate's Spinks was hit by a pitch and Whitney Scott was walked to load the bases with two outs. Erin Gomez then doubled to right center scoring two, to take a 6-3 advantage going into the sixth inning. Colgate added one more to win the game, 7-3.
The Crusaders will face Colgate in a doubleheader Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Freshman Field.
