Holy Cross Softball Swept By Boston University

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross softball team was swept by Boston University in a doubleheader at Freshman Field, losing by scores of 12-0 and 1-0. The Crusaders fall to 3-9 overall, while the Terriers improve to 11-13.
The first game was scoreless through three innings, before Boston University scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Melissa Dubay drove in the first run with an RBI single, then Molly Gallagher added a two-run double. The Terriers went up 5-0 in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI single from Christy Leath and an RBI double by Josey Mendez. Boston University then put seven more runs on the board in the sixth inning to conclude the scoring, with the biggest hit being a two-run double by Liz Alley. Brittany Detwiler picked up the victory for the Terriers, allowing only three hits in six innings of work. Junior Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.) took the loss for Holy Cross, allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings. Sophomore Jayme Elliott (Gardena, Calif.) led the Crusader offense in game one, going two for three at the plate.
In game two, Boston University scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Shayne Lotito led off the inning with a fly ball to left field which fell in for a double, then moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI groundout by Christy Leath. Cassidi Hardy earned the win for the Terriers, allowing only one hit and striking out eight in seven innings. Senior Marsha Babcock (Ridgefield, Conn.) pitched well for Holy Cross in defeat, giving up just one run on four hits in a seven-inning, complete game effort. Freshman Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) had the only hit of the game for the Crusaders, with a line drive single to left field in the fourth inning.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, March 29, when it plays host to Connecticut at 3:30 p.m.
