Holy Cross Softball Edged By Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) made her first start of the season, pitching a five-hit complete game as the Holy Cross softball team fell to Hartford on Wednesday afternoon in West Hartford, Conn. In the first game, the Crusaders fell 2-1 in eight innings and lost by the same score, 2-1, in the second game. With the two losses, Holy Cross falls to 6-14, while Hartford improves to 6-9.
The Holy Cross softball team opened game one of the two-game series with a quick run in the first inning. The Crusaders' offense got started when sophomore Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) reached first on a wild pitch and then put herself in scoring position with a stolen base. Medwid reached home on a RBI single by sophomore Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) to give the Crusaders the early lead.
Hartford put a run up in the third inning, scoring with two outs. Sara Messinger took first on a walk and then advanced to second and scored on back-to-back singles.
Tied at the end of seven innings, the game went into a tie-breaker and Hartford capitalized on the free runner to score and win the game. The Hawks placed Amanda Sais on second base and advanced her to third on a fielder's choice. Sais scored the game-winning run a suicide bunt by Lauren Kamena.
Alexander pitched a complete game for the Crusaders, giving up two runs on five Hartford hits. Brittney Stratton picked up the win for the Hawks, pitching eight complete innings and giving up one run on four hits.
Hartford took the early lead on a homerun by Ann Kyzer in the fourth inning and then scored again in the sixth inning when Shannon Simpkins reached first on an error, stole second and then scored on a RBI single up the middle.
With their rally caps on, the Crusaders scored in the top of the seventh inning. Freshman Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.) started the rally with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a ground out by junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.). Ortiz scored on a double by junior Elizabeth Foley (Charlton, Mass.). Unable to score again, the Crusaders fell to the Hawks 2-1.
Junior pitcher Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass) made the start for the Crusaders, pitching a complete game. Audette gave up one earned run on three hits, striking out two Hawks. Siera Sheehan earned the win for Hartford, pitching seven complete innings, giving up one run on five Holy Cross hits.
Holy Cross kicks off Patriot League action at Freshman Field in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29. The Crusaders will host Bucknell in a four-game series beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
