KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Junior Sheena Stangler (Bremerton, Wash.) had a triple and two runs batted in, to lead the Holy Cross softball team to a 4-3 victory over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne at the Osceola Complex. The Crusaders improve to 1-1 on the season with the win, while Mastodons fall to 0-8.
Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when freshman Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) walked and was later knocked in by senior Heather Johnson (Wrentham, Mass.). The Crusaders then increased their lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. After a double by sophomore Amanda Webster (Kenmore, N.Y.) and a single by Cruz, Stangler delivered a two-run triple. Senior Nicole Dessingue (Schaghitcoke, N.Y.) would double later in the inning to drive in Stangler.
IPFW would scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the game close, but neither team would score again. The Mastodons scored their first run on an error with two outs, then Nancy Herron added a two-run single to account for the rest of the scoring.
Senior Marsha Babcock earned the victory over Holy Cross, allowing just four hits and no earned runs in five innings of work. Cruz picked up the save, tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Jenna Connelly took the loss for IPFW, allowing four runs on eight hits in a seven-inning, complete game effort.
Dessingue was the only Crusader to record multiple hits in the game, as she went two for three.
