Holy Cross Softball Drops Two Games

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Sophomore Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) lengthened her hit streak to eight games as the Holy Cross softball team dropped two games at the Stony Brook Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y. on Sunday, March 22. The Crusaders fell to Quinnipiac 7-3 and were shut out by Fairfield 7-0. With the two losses, the Crusaders fall to 6-12 overall.
Holy Cross vs. Quinnipiac
Quinnipiac put seven runs on the scoreboard before the Crusaders were able to get any offensive action started. Down 7-0, Holy Cross scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Crusaders got the rally going when sophomore Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) singled down the right field line and advanced to second. Seniuk moved up a base on a hit by freshman Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.) and scored on a RBI single by sophomore Sam Lenhardt (Duxbury, Mass.). With two outs, junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) ripped a triple to right field to score Ortiz and Lenhardt. The Crusaders were unable to score any more runs, ending the rally and falling 7-3.
Sophomore Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) started on the bump for the Crusaders, pitching four innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out two batters. Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) came in for relief, pitching three innings and giving up four runs on six hits. Holy Cross scored three runs on five hits, while Quinnipiac scored seven runs on 10 hits.
Holy Cross vs. Fairfield
The Crusaders were shut out in the 7-0 loss to Fairfield. The Stags scored six runs in the fourth inning on seven hits, one triple, three doubles and three singles. Fairfield scored again in the sixth inning, scoring one run on two hits and one Holy Cross error.
Fairfield pitcher Sarah Minice held Holy Cross to just three hits. Senior Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) started for Holy Cross, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out one Stag, while junior Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out five.
Holy Cross continues non-conference action on the road, traveling to West Hartford, Conn. for a doubleheader with Hartford on Wednesday, March 25 starting at 3:00 p.m.
