Holy Cross Softball Falls 6-4 To Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Sophomore Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit her second homerun of the season as the Holy Cross softball team fell to Stony Brook, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Stony Brook Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-10, while the Seawolves improve to 11-3.

The first inning was scoreless, as neither team was able to get a run across home plate. Stony Brook cracked the scoreboard in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Molly Kestranek led off with a double to left field, moved to third on the sacrifice bunt and scored on the fielder's choice. The Seawolves then put two more runs across the plate when Vicki Kavitsky hit a two run home run over the right field fence.

The Crusaders responded, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. Holy Cross got the rally started when senior Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) was walked. Junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) singled to shortstop to move Cruz up a base and freshman Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) singled up the middle to put Cruz across the plate. Sophomore Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) dropped down a bunt single to score Correale and Reimer took advantage of a Stony Brook error to score the third run of the inning and tie the game 3-3.

The Seawolves scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead, 6-3. The Crusaders scored one run in the fourth inning on the solo homerun by Seniuk, but were unable to get any closer, falling to Stony Brook, 6-4.

Sophomore Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) started in the circle for the Crusaders, giving up six runs on 11 hits in six complete innings. Belanger falls to 4-3, while Stony Brook's Colleen Matthes picked up the win and improves to 3-2. The Crusaders scored four runs on six hits.

Holy Cross will continue competition at the Stony Brook Invitational, playing Quinnipiac at 10:30 a.m. and Fairfield at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.
