KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Sophomore Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) opened the 2009 season with a victory on the mound as the Holy Cross softball team defeated St. Bonaventure, 9-7, in the season opener at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Crusaders fell to Detroit, 5-0, in the second game of the morning.

Junior pitcher Dettey Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) made the start for the Crusaders, while Belanger entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with Holy Cross down, 2-1. Belanger led the Crusaders to the 9-7 victory, getting offensive help from junior right fielder Elizabeth Foley (Charlton, Mass.) who went 2-4 with two singles and sophomore left fielder Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) who was 3-4. Holy Cross scored nine runs on 13 hits.
Holy Cross vs. Detroit
After a rain delay, senior Natalie Cruz (Manalapan, N.J.) started in the circle for Holy Cross. Sophomore Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) came in for relief in the top of the sixth inning and freshman Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) closed the game. Sophomore Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.), Seniuk, freshman Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.) and junior Mandy Correale (Peabody, Mass.) each had a hit for the Crusaders in the 5-0 loss.
Holy Cross continues action at the Rebel Spring Games on March 2, taking on Niagara in a double header beginning at 9:00 a.m.
