Softball Posts 13-6 Win Over Yale At Stony Brook Invitational
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Senior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) went two-for-four with three runs batted in and sophomore Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) went three-for-five with two RBI as the Holy Cross softball team defeated Yale, 13-6, on Saturday afternoon at the Stony Brook Invitational. The Crusaders move to 5-8 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 2-10.
After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders took advantage of three Yale errors in the top of the second, scoring seven runs while sending 13 batters to the plate. Junior Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) led off the inning with a single to the left side and Keough and senior Kat Rosenthal (Boston, Mass.) reached on back-to-back errors. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) brought in the first Crusader run of the game the hard way, as she was hit by a pitch for a team-high fifth time this season. Freshman Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled in Rosenthal and after Vargas crossed home plate on a fielder's choice and Jarvis advanced home on an error, Fregenti poked a two-RBI single to the right side. Two more singles by Croushore and Keough loaded the bases and a Vargas walk brought in Fregenti to give the Crusaders an early 7-0 advantage.
Lauren Delgadillo led off the bottom of the second with a home run, but Holy Cross freshman starting pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Crusaders up by six, 7-1, after two complete innings.
Keough's two RBI came on a single to right field in the top of the third that brought around Kane, who reached on an error, and junior Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.) who pinch ran for Fregenti after a walk. Yale put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth, but Fregenti and Croushore drove in two more runs for the Crusaders in the top of the fifth as the score read 11-4, HC, after five complete innings.
Freshman Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) hit her first career double in the top of the sixth inning to drive in Vargas, who also doubled. The Bulldogs posted two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Crusaders added one final run in the top of the seventh to give Holy Cross the 13-6 victory.
Durham recorded the win and improves to 4-2 on the season. She allowed three runs on six hits in four innings. Junior Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) came on in relief and pitched three inning while striking out one. Kristen Leung suffered the loss, going two and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs (zero earned) on five hits while striking out one. Rhydian Glass finished the game for the Bulldogs in relief, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out one.
