Softball Swept By Colgate In Final Patriot League Action
HAMILTON, N.Y – The Holy Cross softball team was swept in its final Patriot League conference action on Sunday afternoon falling by scores of 7-2 in game one and 3-0 in game two. Junior Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) reached base three times to lead the Crusader offense going two-for-two with a RBI and walk in game one.
The Raiders got on the board in the top of the first inning when Jennifer Ortega led off with a double to left field and scored on an error to make the score 1-0. Alana Dyson singled in the bottom of the third inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tera Vaughn to double the Colgate lead, 2-0.
The Crusaders answered in the top of the fifth inning when freshman Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) hit a two-out double to left center field and advanced to third on a single by Legros. Raiders' pitcher Courtney O'Connell walked the next two batter to bring Keough home and make the score 2-1. The Raider's responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on five hits to make the score 5-1. Ortega added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Colgate the 7-1 advantage.
Holy Cross added one run in the top of the seventh inning when senior Nicole Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.) led off with a double to right center field. After a ground out, Legros singled up the middle to score Ortiz and make the score 7-2. The Crusaders left runners on first and second in the final inning and could not make the comeback. Sophomore Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) (7-13) took the loss going six innings allowing six earned runs and 12 hits while striking out five. O'Connell (10-11) got the win allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three.
Colgate scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and that was all it would need in game two. Ortego led off with a walk and Haley Fleming drove her in with a double to left center field. Fleming doubled and Vaughn and Dolfi each singled to drive in runs and make the score 3-0 after one.
The Crusaders had two runners on in the top of the first and top of the fifth but were unable to bring them home. Senior Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.), sophomore Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) junior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.), Keough and Ortiz each went one-for-three in game two.
Neither team was able to score after the first inning and Colgate won its third game of the four-game series. Rachel LeCoq (8-9) got the win going seven innings allowing five hits and striking out four. Keough took the loss going six innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out two. Colgate improved to 19-24 (12-8 PL) on the season.
The Crusaders (9-34, 4-16 PL) will conclude the 2012 season on Wednesday, May 2, with a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Freshman Field.
