WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team lost the final two games of its four-game series with Lafayette on Sunday by scores of 2-1 in eight innings and 7-1. Sophomore Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) led the way offensively for the Crusaders extending her hit streak to seven games and going three-for-seven overall on the day.

Game One

The teams exchanged runs in the first inning with the Leopards taking advantage of two Crusader errors but Croushore responded for the Crusaders by driving in senior Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) to tie the game 1-1 after one.

The Crusaders threatened to break the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Rebecca Sewell (Bedminster, N.J.) and Reimer hit back-to-back singles. Freshman Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) then sacrifice bunted the runners into scoring position, but with one out Croushore hit a hard line drive to third baseman Madeline Allen who made the catch and tagged out Sewell scrambling back to the bag to end the inning.

With the score tied after seven innings the game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Jordan Parsons led off with a double down the left field line for the Leopards. After a sacrifice bunt moved Parsons to second, Stacey Dorn doubled to right center field to give Lafayette the 2-1 lead. The Crusaders had runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Leopards' pitcher Melissa Robinson was able to get out of the jam and secure the victory.

Sophomore pitcher Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Crusaders giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out two. Robinson received the win giving up one run on eight hits and striking out five.

Game Two

After Barrett retired the Leopards in order in the first and second innings, Lafayette was able to plate three runs in the top of the third. Allen and Amy Gebhardt hit back-to-back one-out singles and Allen came around to score on a single by Gwen Turner. Jordan Parsons then doubled in Gebhardt and Turner to make the score 3-0. The Leopards scored two more runs in the top of the fourth off senior relief pitcher Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.), who had entered the circle prior to the start of the inning.

The Crusaders' lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Croushore tallied her second hit of the ballgame and advanced to third on a single by junior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.). Sophomore Alex Gustafson (Medford, Mass.) then drove in Croushore on a single to center field to make the score 5-1.

The Leopards added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as Kristen Berger and Caitlin Summers both scored on a double by Lauren Murphy. With the score 7-1 the Crusaders were unable to rally back in the bottom of the seventh inning and Lafayette took home its second victory of the day.

Barrett (3-10) suffered the loss going three innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three. Trainor went four innings allowing four runs on nine hits. Robinson (7-11) earned her third victory of the series going seven complete innings allowing one run on seven hits and striking out two.
