Softball Wins Second Game Of Twin Bill With Marist

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team split a doubleheader with Marist (9-15) on Saturday afternoon falling by a score of 12-3 in game one but earning a 6-3 victory in game two to move to 3-14 on the season. Freshman Emma Keough (Rochester, Mass.) went one-for-two off the bench in the first game and two-for-two with two RBI in the second to lead the Crusaders. Sophomore Kelliner Croushore (Claremont, Calif.) and junior Kat Rosenthal (Boston, Mass.) also added two hits each in the Holy Cross victory while sophomore Sarah Free (Claremont, Calif.) hit her first career home run in game one.

Marist began the day with three runs in the first and second innings taking advantage of three Crusader errors. All of the runs in the second inning were unearned. Holy Cross got a run back in the bottom of the first when sophomore Alex Gustafson (Medford, Mass.) came around to score on an error after drawing a lead-off walk. Free then blasted her first home run over the left center field fence to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 6-2. Marist answered in the top of the third with a home run of its own by Aly Klemmer. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Red Foxes added a run in the fifth and two runs in each of the final two frames to bring its final tally to 12. Keough scored the final run for Holy Cross after hitting a triple to right field, marking her first career hit, and crossing the plate on an error.

Junior pitcher Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) suffered her fourth loss of the season giving up 14 hits and 12 runs (nine earned). Emily Osterhaus recorded the win for Marist going four innings and allowing four hits and two runs, both earned. She struck out five and walked one to move to 3-4 on the year.

Game two began with Marist plating two unearned runs in the top of the first as errors continued to plaque the Crusaders. Holy Cross responded in the bottom of the second when Keough singled up the middle to score senior Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) and Croushore. After Gustafson led off the bottom of the third with a walk and senior Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) singled to knock Marist pitcher Paige Lewis out of the circle, junior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) doubled to right field to record two RBI and tie the game.

The final run for the Red Foxes came in the top of the fifth inning when Klemmer scored on a RBI double by Joelle Zahka, cutting the Crusader lead to 4-3 at the time. Holy Cross added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Croushore and Keough singled to start the inning. Rosenthal singled to center to drive in Croushore and freshman Abigail Lang (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in Free, who pinch ran for Keough, with a ground out to second base.

Lewis recorded the loss for Marist going just two innings and allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits and walking two. Melanie White came on to pitch and allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits while striking out three. Sophomore Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) earned her second victory of the season to bring her record to 2-6. She allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two.

The Crusaders will continue its four-game home stand on Tuesday, March 27, when it hosts Rhode Island for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
