WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior second baseman Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) has been named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region Northeast second team. Belanger becomes just the second Crusader to earn the award as Alycia FitzPatrick was named to the second team in 2004 as a designated player. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) honors student-athletes from the 10 NFCA regions. A total of 259 players from 127 different institutions comprise this season's regional teams. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams.
This season, Belanger led all starters with a .373 batting average and started in a team-high 16 games from the circle. She also scored a team-high and school record 40 runs and had 59 hits, leading the team and setting a new school record in that category as well. She was named to the second team All-Patriot League for the second straight season. She finished her career fifth all-time at Holy Cross with 81 runs scored, tied for fifth with 25 doubles, first with 55 stolen bases and second with 53 walks. As a pitcher, Belanger is tied for sixth all-time with 48 starts, tied for fifth with 24 complete games and fifth with 17 career wins.
The Holy Cross softball team wrapped up the 2011 season at the Patriot League Tournament, losing two straight games to be eliminated from contention. The Crusaders finished the 2011 campaign with an 18-31 overall record, including 10 wins and 10 losses in league play. The 18 wins marks the most since 1999 when Holy Cross finished with an overall record of 24-25. The Crusaders' 10 Patriot League wins are the most since 2003 when they also finished with a league record of 10-10.
