Postgame video with Sam Fregenti

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) hit three home runs to lead the Holy Cross softball team to a 10-7 victory over Colgate in the final game of the four-game series. The Raiders won the first game of the day, 8-4. With the split, Holy Cross improves to 16-23 overall and qualifies for the Patriot League tournament for the first time since 2003 with a 9-7 league record. Colgate moves to 22-18 overall and continues to lead the league with a 13-2 league record.

Game 1

A solo home run by Stephanie Hartquist in the second inning started the offense for Colgate in the day's first game. The Raiders kept the offense going in the third inning when Jen Ortega ripped a three-run home run to give Colgate a 4-0 lead. Senior Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) led off the fourth inning with a single to left field and, after stealing second base, scored on a double by Fregenti. With runners on second and third, junior Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) grounded out to third base, but smart base running and a Colgate error scored two for the Crusaders to make it a one-run game.

Colgate ran away with the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits. Holy Cross added a run in the fifth, but couldn't get any closer, falling by a score of 8-4 to Colgate. Freshman Kali Haas (Longmont, Colo.) suffered the loss in three innings of action. Haas allowed eight runs on nine hits. Freshman Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Colgate's Rachel LeCoq earned her 14th win of the season in seven innings of work. LeCoq allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out seven batters.

Game 2

Fregenti led off game two with a three-run home run to give Holy Cross a quick three-run lead. A double by senior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) in the second inning scored a run and a ground out by Trainor put another on the board, as Holy Cross had a five-run lead after two innings of play. A leadoff home run by Fregenti, her eighth of the season, in the third inning broke the Holy Cross single-season record and gave the Crusaders a 6-0 lead.

Colgate scored a run in the fourth, but Holy Cross answered back with two in the top of the fifth. The Raiders threatened Holy Cross' lead with five runs in the sixth inning, bringing the game within two. In the seventh inning, Seniuk scored on a wild pitch and Fregenti hit her third home run of the game to give Holy Cross a 10-6 lead. Hartquist homered for the second time in the day in the seventh inning to score Colgate's seventh run of the game, but the Crusaders held on for the victory.

Barrett picked up the win for the Crusaders, pitching five complete innings and allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three. Sophomore Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) pitched an inning and Belanger closed out the final inning in the winning effort. Colgate's Courtney O'Connell suffered the loss after pitching the first two innings. Michelle Hollebeke entered the game in relief for the Raiders, pitching four complete innings, and Lacy Ver Steeg closed out the final inning.

Holy Cross returns to the field tomorrow, April 26, for a single game against non-conference opponent Boston University. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
