WORCESTER, Mass. – Home runs by Lauren Fry and Alison Ford paced the Bucknell offense in game one and timely two out hitting in game two led the Bison to a two-game Patriot League sweep over the Holy Cross softball team Saturday afternoon at Freshman Field. Holy Cross suffered a five inning, 14-6 loss in game one, before falling, 4-3, in game two. With the two losses, Holy Cross falls to 12-19 overall (6-4 Patriot League), while Bucknell improves to 11-27 overall (3-7 Patriot League).
Fry's first home run of the season was a big one, as it gave the Bison an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Holy Cross wasted no time, taking back the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) led off with a double through the left side of the infield and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Alex Gustafson (Medford, Mass.). Bucknell held Belanger at third on fielder's choice by senior Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.), but failed to get the out, allowing Seniuk to take first base. Belanger and Seniuk tied the game when they both scored on a double by junior Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.). Junior Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.), who had reached base after getting hit by a pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) and Reimer scored on a single by freshman Amber Jones (Manorville, N.Y.) to give Holy Cross a 4-2 lead.
Bucknell came up big in the second inning, scoring five runs on four hits and taking advantage of two Holy Cross errors. The Bison struck again in the third inning with five runs on five hits and put two more runs on the board in the fourth. Holy Cross fought back in the fifth, scored two runs with no outs when Fregenti reached base after getting hit by a pitch and went to third on a double by Reimer. Both runners scored on a double by Fleming, but it was not enough to earn the winning as the Crusaders fell, 14-6.
Freshman Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) made the start for the Crusaders, pitching one and two-thirds innings. Barrett allowed seven runs (two earned) on six hits, while suffering her second loss of the season. Sophomore Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) pitched the middle one and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and junior Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) made an appearance in the final one and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Bucknell's Bridget Gates earned the win for the Bison, pitching five complete innings and allowing six runs on seven hits.
Belanger led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to left field to give Holy Cross a quick, 1-0, lead. The Bison responded with four runs in the top of the second that proved to be all that Bucknell would need. Holy Cross chipped away at the Bison's lead with a pair of doubles in the fourth to score a run and a home run by Gustafson in the fifth brought the game within one, but the Crusaders wouldn't get any closer, falling 4-3 in the day's second game.
Belanger pitched seven complete innings for the Crusaders, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. Alex MacLean pitched seven complete for the Bison, giving up three runs on six hits.
Holy Cross and Bucknell will return to Freshman Field on Sunday, April 17 for a pair of league games. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
