Softball Goes 1-1 In Patriot League Action Against Army

WORCESTER, Mass. – With the game on the line, senior Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) homered to send the day's first game to extra innings as the Holy Cross softball team split a pair of Patriot League games with Army Sunday afternoon. In game one, Holy Cross sent the game to extras, falling 3-2 in the 11th inning. The Crusaders rebounded for a 13-4 win in game two to earn the split. With a 1-1 record on the day, Holy Cross moves to 12-15 overall (6-2 Patriot League) and Army moves to 18-16 overall (2-6 Patriot League).

Game 1  

Army marked the first run of the day in the first inning when Amanda Nguyen singled, stole second base and scored on a RBI single by Alexis AuBuchon. Alex Reynolds led off the sixth inning with a home run to left field to give the Black Knights a 2-0 lead. Army held Holy Cross scoreless for the first six innings of the game, but in the seventh, with a runner on base and two outs, Seniuk homered to left field, breaking the Holy Cross all-time home run record and tying the game, 2-2. After Army failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, the game went to extra innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, Army's Haley Pypes homered to left center to end the game in favor of the Black Knights, 3-2. Freshman Kali Haas (Longmont, Colo.) pitched the first four innings, giving up one run on four hits. Senior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) pitched the final six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits and suffering the loss. Army's Shawna Bleyl pitched all 11 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and earning her ninth win of the season. Army scored three runs on nine hits and had one error, while the Crusaders scored two runs on seven hits and didn't commit any errors.

Game 2 

Holy Cross' offense came to life in the day's second game as the Crusaders scored 13 runs on 15 hits to end the game in the sixth inning. Holy Cross led off the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits and capitalizing on an error by Army. In the second inning, Holy Cross added a run to take a 6-0 lead. Army put a run on the scoreboard in the third, but Holy Cross answered back with three in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. Army scored two in the bottom of the inning before Holy Cross put up one in the fifth and three in the sixth on its way to a 13-4 victory.

Junior Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) led Holy Cross' offensive charge, going four for five at the plate. Junior Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.) and Seniuk also recorded multiple hits, Reimer going three for four with two runs scored and Seniuk going two for four with three runs scored.

Freshman Julia Barrett (Gardner, Mass.) pitched the first three innings and sophomore Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) entered the game in the final three, earning her second Patriot League win. Barrett gave up one run on three hits, while Legros allowed three runs on seven hits. Army's Pypes pitched the first three and one-third innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits. Marina Northup entered the game for the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.

Holy Cross will take a break from Patriot League play with a doubleheader against Harvard on Tuesday, April 12, starting at 3:00 p.m.
