Holy Cross Softball Drops Two To Lehigh
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team outhit Lehigh 11-9 Sunday afternoon, put were unable to turn those hits into runs, falling 5-2 and 5-0 in the doubleheader. With the two losses, Holy Cross falls to 14-31 (8-12 Patriot League), while Lehigh improves to 31-17 (14-6 Patriot League). With the completion of this weekend's games, the field for the Patriot League Tournament has been set. Army, Lehigh, Bucknell and Colgate clinched spots in the tournament, with the top seed to be determined next Friday when Army and Colgate make up a doubleheader that was postponed due to inclement weather.
Lehigh took an early 5-0 lead, scoring three runs in the second inning and two in the third forcing Holy Cross to play from behind early in the game. Facing a shut out, the Crusaders were able to get a run across the plate in the sixth inning when junior Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) scored on a RBI single to left field by sophomore Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.). Junior Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) blasted a home run over the left field fence in the seventh inning, but the Crusaders couldn't get any closer, falling 5-2 in game one.
Junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) pitched six complete innings for the Crusaders, allowing five runs on five hits and striking out four batters. Lehigh's Tiffany Curtis pitched seven complete innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out four Crusaders. Holy Cross left seven runners stranded, while Lehigh left four on base.
Despite out hitting the Mountain Hawks 6-4, Holy Cross couldn't find away to score, falling 5-0 in the final game of the four-game series. Lehigh took advantage of five walks in the third inning to score three runs on one hit. With two outs in the fourth inning, the Mountain Hawks scored on back-to-back singles to take a 4-0 lead and then put up one more run in the sixth inning to end the game 5-0.
Senior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.) worked the circle for the first two innings, allowing two runs on no hits. Freshman Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits and Belanger pitched the final two and one-third innings, allowing one run on one hit.
The Crusaders have concluded the 2010 season.
