Holy Cross Softball Splits With Lehigh

WORCESTER, Mass.  – The Holy Cross softball team took advantage of timely hitting to defeat Lehigh, 3-2, in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders suffered a 7-3 loss in the second game of the day. With the spilt, Holy Cross moves to 8-10 in the Patriot League (14-29 overall), while Lehigh clinched a Patriot League tournament spot and moves to 12-6 in the Patriot League (29-17 overall).

Game 1

In the bottom of the second inning, junior Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) drew a one out walk and then stole second base before scoring the first Crusader run of the game on a single to right field by sophomore Gwen Reimer (Pottsville, Pa.). Junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to left field to give Holy Cross a 2-0 lead. Lehigh scored two runs on three hits and capitalized on a Holy Cross error to tie the game in the fourth inning.

With the game tied and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Seniuk doubled to center field to start a Holy Cross rally. Reimer reached first on an error by the shortstop and a pinch-hit single by senior Courtney Nealon (Rochester, N.Y.) scored Seniuk from second base to give Holy Cross a 3-2 lead. Lehigh came up with two hits in the seventh inning, but couldn't find a way to get the runners across the plate, ending the game in favor of the Crusaders 3-2.

Belanger pitched seven complete innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits and striking out five Lehigh batters. Lehigh's Tiffany Curtis pitched six complete innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out nine Holy Cross batters. Lehigh left 11 runners stranded on base, while Holy Cross left five on base. Both teams committed one error.

Game 2

Holy Cross took advantage of two Lehigh errors in the first inning of the second game to take an early 2-0 lead. Belanger led off the inning with a single to left field and then stole second base. Senior Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) reached first base on an error by the Lehigh shortstop and then on an error by the Lehigh catcher, Audette went to second base and Belanger scored. Freshman Sam Fregenti (Melville, N.Y.) hit a two-out double to center field to score Audette and put the Crusaders up 2-0. Holy Cross took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when junior Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) scored on an error by the Lehigh left fielder.

The Mountain Hawks tied the game 3-3 in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits and capitalizing on one Holy Cross error. Lehigh scored again in the fourth inning and then put up three in the fifth to win the game 7-3.

Junior Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) pitched the first three innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Freshman Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) pitched the middle three innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and sophomore Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) pitched the final three outs, allowing no hits. The Crusaders scored three runs on nine hits and committed two errors, while the Mountain Hawks scored seven runs on 11 hits and had four errors. Both teams left seven runners stranded.

Holy Cross and Lehigh will finish the four game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, May 2, starting at 12:00 p.m. at Freshman Field. Prior to the first pitch, Holy Cross will honor its five seniors on Senior Day.
