Holy Cross Softball Splits With Central Connecticut

NEW BRITAIN, Conn.   – Nine runs in the first inning led to a 9-7 victory in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader as the Holy Cross softball team split a pair of games with Central Connecticut State Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders dropped the first game 11-0 in five innings. With the split, the Crusaders move to 10-26, while the Blue Devils move to 16-24.

Game 1

Holy Cross only had one hit as the Blue Devils scored 11 runs on 11 hits to win 11-0 in five innings. Central Connecticut scored three runs in the second inning, put one up in the third and then added seven in the fourth to win the game 11-0.

Senior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.) pitched the first two innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Sophomore Camille Trainor (Worcester, Mass.) pitched one and one-third innings and freshman Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) took care of the final two outs. Central Connecticut scored 11 runs on 11 hits and didn't have an error, while Holy Cross was shut out with just one hit and committed three errors.

Game 2

A nine run first inning led to a 9-7 win in game two on Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders took advantage of two Blue Devil errors to score nine runs on eight hits in the first inning. Central Connecticut slowly battled back, scoring one run in the first inning, one in the second and five in the fifth to end the game 9-7 in favor of the Crusaders.

Junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) started the game, pitching two innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits. Junior Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) pitched four innings, allowing five runs on five hits.

Holy Cross will host a four-game series with Patriot League opponent Lafayette on Saturday-Sunday, April 24-25 at Freshman Field. Both days' games will start at 12:00 p.m.
