WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior Erin Fleming (Townsend, Mass.) hit her seventh home run of the season as the Holy Cross softball team dropped two Patriot League games to Army Sunday afternoon at the Army Softball Complex. The Black Knights took game one 5-4 and then came from behind to win game two 6-3. With the two wins, Army improves to 23-15 overall (10-2 Patriot League), while the Crusaders fall to 9-25 (4-8 Patriot League).
A two-run double by senior Amanda Audette (New Bedford, Mass.) tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning and then Audette scored on a single by junior Tiffany Medwid (Imperial, Pa.) to give the Crusaders an early 3-2 lead. Army tied the game 3-3 in the third inning, but the Crusaders regained the lead when junior Keeley Seniuk (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Army tied the game for the second time in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Erin McLain and then three singles in the sixth inning led to the game winning run as the Black Knights defeated the Crusaders 5-4.
Junior Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) pitched her ninth complete game of the season, allowing five runs on 10 hits. The Black Knights scored five runs on 10 hits and left nine runners on base, while the Crusaders scored four runs on eight hits and left seven runners on base.
A two-run home run by Fleming gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead in the first inning of action in game two. Army scored a run in the fourth inning to cut Holy Cross' lead in half and then put three runs on the board in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Black Knights went up by four runs in the seventh inning, but the Crusaders fought back in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run to end the game in favor of Army 6-3.
Senior Melissa Pivonka (Tolland, Conn.), freshman Jenna Legros (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and junior Katie Alexander (Tigard, Ore.) teamed up on the pitching duties for the Crusaders. Pivonka pitched the first three and one-third innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three batters. Alexander pitched the middle one and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Legros pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Army scored six runs on 10 hits and made three errors. Holy Cross scored three runs on six hits and played errorless softball.
The Crusaders will travel to Central Connecticut for a mid-week doubleheader with the Blue Devils on Thursday, April 22. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
